Why we're going to Waitrose for the best lemon curd (1)

It's a ray of sunshine on a cold Winter's day - the light and tangy spread can be served on scones, in tarts or as a way to jazz up a dessert.

The best lemon curd is smooth but tart with a thick and tangy texture. It should be yellow like a ray of sunshine on a Summer's day - anything else just won't do. Our panel was looking for a buttery lemon flavour that compliments any dessert or sweet treat.

We blind tasted 10 different brands from Marks & Spencer to Lidl, and brands like Rosebud and Wilkin & Son. Our testers found Waitrose's Vibrant Smooth and Refreshing Lemon Curd to be the best, tastiest option we tested...

Score: 80/100

Marks & Spencer Sicilian Lemon Curd costs £2 for 325g, and it's available in shops only.

Beautifully rich in flavour, the curd has a sharp, zesty tang and a freshness that's moreish. Small bits of hard lemon peel are an unwelcome surprise, however the general smoothness of the curd is pleasant. The subtle bitterness and sweetness also work well together.

Score: 80/100

The Tesco Finest Lemon Curd costs £1.65 for 320g.

With its perfect glossy sheen and milky yellow colour, this Tesco lemon curd is very appealing. The bitter notes work pleasantly with the sour tang and sweetness. The curd also has a delightfully thick and creamy consistency, but is slightly cloying in mouth.

Price: £1.65

5

Wilkin & Sons Lemon Curd

Why we're going to Waitrose for the best lemon curd (7)

Score: 77/100

Wilkin & Sons Lemon Curd costs £2.19 for 312g.

This is a sweet tasting curd with a sharp, zesty finishing kick. We love the rich, smooth texture and the glossy sheen to its deep, yellow colour. However, our testers would've preferred a deeper lemon flavour from start to finish.

Price: £2.19

Available from: ocado.com

Waitrose 1 Lemon Curd

Score: 77/100

Waitrose 1 Lemon Curd costs £1.99 for 325g.

If you like a sharp tasting curd, this Waitrose 1 option is perfect. The zingy lemon flavour is deliciously strong, but our taste testers complained of a grittiness to the curd. That said, we loved the freshness in the flavour and the glossy sheen.

Lidl Deluxe Lemon Curd

Why we're going to Waitrose for the best lemon curd (9)

Score: 75/100

Lidl Deluxe Lemon Curd is £1.65 for 320g, available in shops only.

Buttery, zingy, and delicious. We loved the creaminess of this curd and found the strength of the tartness mouth-wateringly tasty. However, some said it's a bit too sharp. It's a litlle too dark in colour, and the curd looks caramelised instead of the bright lemon yellow you'd expect.

Price: £1.65

8

Roots & Wings Lemon Curd

Why we're going to Waitrose for the best lemon curd (10)

Score: 59/100

Roots & Wings Lemon Curd costs £3.30 for 300g.

This is a disappointing lemon curd. Though pleasantly smooth, the thick gluey texture didn't go down well with our taste panel. The curd has a lovely sharpness that balances well with the sweetness but the unpleasant cheesy aftertaste is overpowering. Many noted that the dark colour of the curd reminded them more of caramel sauce than lemons.

Price: £3.30

Available from: ocado.com

9

Score: 57/100

Rosebud Preserves Lemon Curd is 184g for £3.75.

Runny and grainy, the curd lacked the creaminess we were looking for. While the citrus flavour was lovely, it failed to pack a punch.

Score: 48/100

Aldi Grandessa Lemon Curd costs £0.45 for 411g, it's available in shops only.

This Aldi lemon curd has a mild but delicious lemon flavour, but it lacks the desired richness. Unfortunately the curd has an over-sweetened, candied taste that dulls the sharpness. Many testers were put off by the thick, slightly grainy texture.
