Whole Grains Can Reduce the Risk of Liver Cancer | Horizon Oncology (2024)

Liver Cancer

Liver cancer comes in many different forms, the most common being hepatocellular carcinoma. In this type, two things can happen: A single tumor may grow in the liver and increase in size over time, or small tumors may develop within the liver and start to spread throughout the body.

Research indicates that the foods we eat can have a significant impact on the way that our bodies respond to, or even prevent, certain diseases. As the following study suggests, you need good sources of whole grains in order to receive the best liver nutrition.

Whole Grains and Liver Cancer

In a study of 125,455 individuals that took place over 24 years, 141 of the participating individuals had hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer in adults. Interestingly, it was discovered that those who routinely ate good sources of whole grains had a lower risk of developing HCC. This indicated that there might be a liver-health diet that people should adhere to in order to reduce the risk of developing liver cancer. Even those already suffering from cancer could benefit from proper nutrition for the treatment of liver cancer.

It should be noted that this study was observational — meaning that the authors of the study noticed that there was a relationship between the intake of whole grains and the reduced risk of HCC. No clear conclusion was drawn as to why the grains impacted the reduced risk of HCC development.

The American Cancer Society suggests following a liver cancer diet in order to prevent cancer from occurring. They recommend eating whole grain products and staying away from grain products that are refined. Not only can this reduce the risk of cancer, but it can also help stave off heart disease and diabetes. In terms of a good, liver-healthy diet, you should look for the following products: rye, oatmeal, pumpernickel, whole grain bread, whole grain cereals, whole wheat bagels, pasta, corn tortillas, and brown rice. Another way to add whole grains to your diet: opt for bulgur or quinoa instead of couscous.
