Investors file claims for losses Caring friend leaves sad sorority sisters Fenidale voters OK bond issue "3 ERNDALE Voters on i Wednesday approved a ,3 bond issue to build junior high and elementary schools and Bennett Jr. promised to at least double money invested by charities by combining it with matching grants from anonymous donors. Wealthy individuals were told they could invest with the foundation, the money would be doubled through anonymous donors, and then the sum would be donated to a charity of the individual's choice. But the anonymous donors did not exist. Bennett has denied wrongdoing and no charges have been filed against him.

Court employees said it would be days before the complete list of creditors is released. New Era has about $31 million in cash assets, according to the federal trustee overseeing the bankruptcy. ciety claim is just "part of the process" all creditors are going through. The deadline for filing was Monday, but some claims were still being processed. Total claims processed so far totaled $355 million, according to figures provided by the court and by lawyers for individual claimants.

The final total was expected to change as the later claims were processed. More than 300 organizations and individuals entrusted money to New Era, from the Philadelphia Orchestra to philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller. The depositors included 184 Christian organizations. The foundation declared bankruptcy May 15. State and federal authorities investigating New Era say founder John G.

Scheme victimized Michigan charities Free Press Staff and Wires Depositors in a bankrupt foundation have filed hundreds of millions of dollars in claims, many seeking their lost money and the promised returns on their investments. A preliminary listing of claims for money lost to the Foundation for New Era Philanthropy was released Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Philadelphia. The foundation collapsed after operating a scheme in which it paid earlier investors with deposits from newer participants. At least 20 Michigan nonprofits and individuals including the Detroit Institute of Arts had millions of dollars tied up in New Era when it collapsed.

The DIA has filed a claim for $1 million the nonprofit's actual loss, said Joseph Bianco, executive vice president of the museum's Founders Society. Among the other Michigan charities involved: Johnson Foundation, Birmingham; Mission India, Grand Rapids; Spring Arbor College, Spring Arbor. Officials from these groups could not be reached for comment Wednesday on what claims, if any, they filed with the bankruptcy court. Bianco said filing the Founders So to renovate aging buildings. The vote was Plans call for spending $8 million for a junior high, $3.7 million for an elementary school and $300,000 apiece for new media centers at all schools.

Another $6.5 million will be earmarked for computers. The proposal will add 5.4 mills to the district's 7.6-mill levy. Ferndale has about 6,600 students and an operating budget of $46 million. The proposal would add $135 per year to the tax bill of a $50,000 home. Vote to determine ward or at-large council State bers would be elected from specific districts in the city.

The areas have not been drawn. Moore said wards would allow De-troiters to "call that one council member" for services, instead of having to hunt for a sympathetic ear among nine at-large members. The proposal also expands from nine to 11 the number of council members, by creating an at-large council president and a president pro tem. They would run at large. BY MATTHEW G.

DAVIS Free Press Staff Writer Detroit voters will get to decide likely in August whether to elect their city council members by ward or at large. The city Charter Revision Commission voted Wednesday night to give voters a choice between keeping the current, at-large system or going to a system of wards, the vote was 6-3. Under the wards proposal, made by commissioner Joyce Moore, nine mem by Bill l. roose Free Press Staff Writer jj Whenever they needed an encour-2 aging word or a bit of advice, sorority Cg sisters knew whom to turn to. They knew Corinne Marie DeLosh, a student at Eastern Michigan Univer-j sity and member of the Delta Zeta sorority, as an outgoing, mother-like friend.

"It was a big deal for her to be a big sister to me," her friend and sorority sister Susan O'Brien said. "She had the most balanced life you could think of. She was the most important part of my life, both as an advice-giver and one who showed me how to be a better person." Miss DeLosh was a huge fan of Billy Joel and Mickey Mouse. The pop singer's music was often heard emanating from her sorority house room, which was decorated with a large collection of Mickey Mouse caps. "Her last wish was to go to Disney -World," O'Brien said.

"She was planning a trip, but she was just too sick. So i the girls in the sorority took her a big bag of Disney stuff and tried to bring Disney to her as best we could." Miss DeLosh died Monday at her parents' Troy home after an eight-, month battle with non-Hodgkin's lym-; phoma. She was 22. Zi' "She had her own credit card to the JJIsney Store," said her mother, Chrys-l ej DeLosh. "But her love of Mickey jljdn't contradict her elegance." She had planned to graduate from lEMU last May, but chemotherapy treatments prevented her from completing her student-teaching requirements.

She was a 1990 graduate of Bishop Foley High School in Madison -Heights. "She wanted to be a teacher more than anything," O'Brien said. "It broke her heart when she couldn't student-! teach in January." Miss DeLosh had worked as a day care aide for Ypsilanti Township Parks i and Recreation. She was an EMU pom-' pom girl during her freshman year. She helped mother many of the Death notices Corinne Marie DeLosh young women living in the sorority house on College Place in Ypsilanti.

"In the Greek system, she was like a grandmother to me," said Betsy Slusher. "We always watched movies and did things together every day. She was great because she never judged you as a person." Besides being a member of EMU's pep squad, Miss DeLosh also was sorority treasurer, rush leader and vice-president for new members. "She was really elegant," said her sorority sister Leslie Pagereski Dubin. "She loved plaid and her hair was always in a ponytail.

Her hair bows had to match her clothes." In tribute, the 12 current Delta Zetas have been wearing red and green plaid ribbons. Besides her mother, she is survived by her father, William, and brother, Paul. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. today at A J. Desmond Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks, Troy.

Community, 40501 Hayes, Sterling Heights until time of Mass at 10:30 De LOSH At age 87, Louis Gothelf found himself the star of an Academy Award-winning film. It was just another of the eventful turns in the long life of the elfin great-grandfather and artist who was born in the same village in Czarist Russia as another painter, Marc Chagall.

Mr. Gothelf, who died at age 94 on Tuesday, was gifted in art, said his daughter, Sue Marx, and also gifted in a life packed with love. Some of that came to him during the filming of the 1988 Oscar-winning short film "Young il Heart." The movie began as a light-hearted real story of the companionship of two octogenarians, Mr. Gothelf and the a idowed Reva Shwayder, also an artist ol i epuic. The lively pair surprised the filmmakers and family by deciding to tu.

the knot. Later, when the picture Aaa nominated for the award, the at heart couple went to Holly-a dressed up in tuxedo and gown, ai.ci rode off sipping champagne in a Cadillac limousine. Earlier in his hotel room, Mr. had his art supplies out and was ketching the trees and gullies of the Hollywood Hills. 'He never went anywhere without his pencils and brushes," Marx said.

"His life was filled with art and family and love. And he had a twinkle." Mr. Gothelf died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his daughter's home in Detroit. He was born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 19(i, and later settled in Chicago whcie he became an artist and set designer for the Chicago Lyric Opera. He and his wife, Leona, moved to Detroit in 1972 to be near their married daughters, Marx and the late Vivian Lieberman.

Shwayder, also widowed after 55 years. They were married for six years before she died in '1993. The film of their courtship began with a scene between Mr. Gothelf and his granddaughter Jody, who asked him why he and Mrs. Shwayder could live together and she and her boyfriend could not.

Gently he tells her they could not get pregnant. Then he said, "And we can't do harm to anyone," recalled his daughter. After the Oscar ceremony, director Lindsay Anderson wrote Marx about her dad and Mrs. Shwayder-Gothelf. Looking at them, he said, "shows what God really meant, for age to be as joyful as youth, only wiser and better." Besides Marx, Mr.
