Crystal Mystery is a Friendship Quest given by Merlin.

The player must have completed A Lesson in Frustration as well as Lost in the Dark Grove.

Friendship[]

The player must be Friendship Level 6 with Merlin.

Once the requirements have been met, the player can speak with Merlin to start this quest.

Dialogue

Player, I'm glad you found me! I have made a marvelous discovery! Do you have time to hear about it? →Yes, I'm ready to listen! Well then, I found a strange black crystal buried in the Forest. It's near the Dark Portal that Donald went through. Most remarkably, it's imbued with magic similar to the Night Thorns. We must investigate to learn more. →Yes, I'm ready! That's the spirit! Our curiosity will spur us onward!

Merlin will ask the player to bring him to the Forest of Valor.

A black Mysterious Shard will be on the ground not far from where the portal was during Lost in the Dark Grove, along the very southern edge of the forest. As the player approaches the shard, it will begin to sparkle.

The player needs to pick the shard up and give it to Merlin.

Dialogue
Ah, another of these Night Shards. Oh, but this one is bigger. Hmm... You should search the Village for more Night Shards. I'm sure there are additional ones buried about.

The player now needs to gather 5 Night Shards. These can be acquired by digging up the ground or clearing Night Thorns.

Once 5 Night Shards have been obtained, the player must speak with Merlin.

Dialogue

Try purifying these Night Shards with a Dream Shard at your Crafting Station. Now, while you were collecting these, I further investigated the large Night Shard. It reacts strongly to Dreamlight Magic. In fact, I believe it was once Dreamlight... ...which has somehow been corrupted and twisted by darkness. We may be able to use Dreamlight to purify all of them. Try combining the Night Shards with a Dream Shard at your Crafting Station.

A Purified Night Shard can be crafted at any Crafting Station in the Potion & Enchantment section using 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard.

Dream Shards can be obtained by digging up the ground, clearing Night Thorns, or as rewards from feeding Critters.

Once the player has crafted a Purified Night Shard, they must bring it back to Merlin.

Dialogue

I was right! The Night Shard is purified! It's shiny. Indeed. Very shiny. It's also a significant magical discovery! Can I give it to one of my friends? Oh... Well, yes. I don't see the harm. After all, the discovery is far more important than the object. Indeed. Very shiny. It's also a significant magical discovery! And as they are rather rare, I'm sure a friend would be grateful to receive such a gift. Well, off with you! Give it to your friend. I'll be pondering our next experiment.

The player can finish the quest by presenting the Purified Night Shard as a gift to any Character in the Village, including Merlin. This can be done by speaking with any Character and opening their gift interface.

• Merlin appears to repeat himself in his third dialogue during the quest. It is unclear whether or not this is intentional.
