To have or not to have: Curd at night (2024)

Amid the sea of nutritional advice freely available on the internet, there are so many things spoken about dairy that it often becomes difficult to separate facts from myths and fads. One such oft-discussed food item is curd and the right time to have it. So, if every night you wonder whether you should have this healthy food, you will not need to do that anymore. Today, we will try to answer all your questions.

According to celebrity nutritionist Shweta Shah, founder of Eatfit24/7, there is no harm in having curd at night. “However, it is recommended to consume it in moderation as it is a dairy product that is rich in fats and proteins, which can be difficult to digest for some individuals at night, leading to discomfort or indigestion. But if you do not have any digestive issues, you can consume curd at night as a part of your balanced diet,” she told indianexpress.com.

Something similar was shared by Neha Sahaya, a nutrition and wellness consultant, on Instagram. Sharing how, according to Ayurveda, curd has both sour and sweet properties, and it increases the kapha dosha in the body, she wrote: “At night, there is a natural predominance of kapha in the body. This can lead to excess mucus development in the nasal passages. However, this does not apply to everyone,” adding that only people prone to asthma or cough and cold should avoid it for dinner as it causes mucus.

“It’s a great vegetarian source of protein, good for the gut, aids in digestion, low in calories, and high in calcium and phosphorous content. Try to have freshly made set curd at home to get the maximum benefits,” she continued.

Benefits of having curd

Curd is a rich source of probiotics, which are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for gut health. These probiotics help improve digestion, boost immunity, and promote healthy gut flora. Curd is also high in calcium and protein, which are essential for bone health and muscle growth. “Additionally, curd is a good source of vitamin B12 and riboflavin, which are important for maintaining healthy skin and hair,” Shah told indianexpress.com.

Curd is generally beneficial for everyone as it provides many essential nutrients and promotes gut health. “However, individuals who are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy products should avoid curd. Also, those who have kidney problems or high cholesterol levels should consume curd in moderation,” Shah informed.

The best time to have curd is during the day, preferably in the morning or afternoon, as it is easier to digest. You can consume it plain or as part of a meal, such as with rice or vegetables. Adding a small amount of fruit, such as banana or mango, can also enhance the taste and nutritional value of curd.

Should curd be consumed both during summer and winter?

Yes, curd can be consumed throughout the year, regardless of the season. “However, during the summer months, it can be particularly refreshing and cooling. If you are prone to cold or cough, you may want to avoid consuming curd during the winter months as it is a cooling food,” Shah suggested.
