We can't try every paddle, but there are some other paddle nerds out there who we love and trust.
Ace - a serve so epic that the opponent can not return and a point is won Dillball - a shot that is inbounds and has bounced once (ie. a live ball) Dink Shot - a soft shot that falls into your opponent's “kitchen” Falafel - a shot that falls short due to hitting the pickleball without any power.
When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning, thus two bounces.
Practicing on the dink master will make a huge impact on your entire game, not just your dinks and volleys. In just 5 - 10 minutes a day on the dink master your coordination will increase and you will see huge increase in your consistency on every shot.
A Bert is a poach shot where a player performs an Erne on their partner's side of the court. The Erne shot is named after pickleball player Erne Perry, who popularized the shot. The name of the Bert shot comes from combining it with Erne to form a pun reference to the Muppets Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street.
It's fun, easy to pick up for first-timers and a great way to stay active. It can be really competitive if you want, or you can play a more laid back game with friends. But perhaps the most fun part of pickleball is getting to know all the silly terms: Dillball: Shot that is inbounds and has bounced once; a live ball.
OPA! It can be heard at some courts after the 3rd shot has been hit, signaling that a volley has begun. Open Face. Holding the pickleball paddle with the face tilted upwards.
Flapjack: What you call one of the first two shots of a pickleball point that must bounce once before it's hit. After the flapjacks, you're free to volley without bouncing.
A soft shot hit on a bounce from the NVZ intended to arc over the net and land within the opposing NVZ either straight across or diagonally crosscourt. An effective dink arcs downward as it crosses the net, creating a more difficult shot to return than a power shot.
To volley a ball means to hit it in the air without first letting it bounce. All volleying must be done with the player's feet behind the non-volley zone line.
To dink properly in pickleball, stand near the kitchen line, hold your paddle loosely, and gently swing back. Open your paddle face slightly, contact the ball at its lowest point, and push forward with control, targeting a soft landing in the opponent's kitchen.
