The History of Alfredo — Zeppoli's Restaurant & Wine Shop (2024)

Did you know that the term “Alfredo” is not used often in Italy?

There are many different combinations of butter and parmesan similar to what we define using the name we recognize, but Italians call all of these combinations “al burro”. Yet, the term Alfredo is used the majority of time in the United States, because two Hollywood actors travelled to Italy and tried the original Alfredo sauce in 1914. Alfredo di Lelio, a Roman restaurateur who was popular among American tourists, named his butter and cheese linguine after himself. These tourists came back to the US and introduced the dish as Lelio named it, Alfredo. The restaurant where Alfredo di Lelio originally made and named this dish is still standing in Italy today, and you can travel there and try the original recipe!
