The figs on my fig tree are not ripening this year. Do you have any idea why? (2024)

Two of the main reasons for figs on a mature tree not to ripen are insufficient sun andlack ofwater. Figs are sun-loving plants. They have really shallow root systems andso are susceptible to water stress. Mulching can help keep the soil moisture level more even. In addition, figs may not ripen if there isn't enough late summer heat. So if you have had a summer with a hot, dry July followed by a fairly cool August, your fruit may not ripen.

Other possible reasons for failure to ripen are lack of potassium and phosphorous, or too much nitrogen. Is your tree next to a lawn that is getting fertilized frequently? It might be getting nitrogen from the lawn fertilizer and impeding fruit production.
