Waking up to, taking a break with, and going to bed after a good cup of coffee is the highlight of many people’s days. This is why knowing which coffee is best to drink depending on the time of day can be useful to all those coffee lovers out there. There is a huge range of coffees that now appear at our local baristas and are even available to make at home.
In Italy, each type of coffee is consumed at different times of the day. Milky coffee is for the morning and black espresso-like coffees are for the afternoon and evenings. Despite personal preference, there are specific coffees that are better for certain times of the day, so let’s find out what the best coffees for morning, afternoon and night times are.
Best coffee for the morning
Coffees are great for any time of the day, however, there are some that are best to have in the morning compared to others. So, let’s find out what those are.
Latte
The latte is known as the classic beverage drunk first in the morning by many and there is good reason for this too. The latte is one of the milkiest coffees that are often paired with dark roasts. A classic latte consists of steamed milk that is added to espresso and can either be served hot or cold.
Cappuccino
A cappuccino is number two on our list of best coffees for the morning. A cappuccino is made from a shot of espresso and frothed milk and traditionally is viewed as a drink that should only be consumed in the morning.
Macchiato
The macchiato is known as a morning drink due to the amount of milk the drink contains. A macchiato is always made with milk that is either frothed or remains flat, the difference in milk depends on whether you order a macchiato or a latte macchiato.
When is the best time to drink coffee in the morning?
The average person would order their coffee on their commute to work, or if working from home, would have their brew freshly made before their workday starts. However, the recommended time to start drinking coffee in the morning is 10 am.
Best coffee for the afternoon
There are some afternoons that can’t carry on without a good cup of coffee, but which coffee should you be drinking to make sure you are getting the most out of your afternoon coffee breaks?
Mocha
Mochas are a great choice for that mid-afternoon coffee break. If you want to treat yourself that little bit more during your coffee break, add a little whipped cream on top!
Americano
The americano is black coffee made with a shot of espresso and hot water, and many called it a ‘watered down espresso’. However, depending on how strong you like your coffee, an americano can be made with a double shot of espresso.
Cortado
A cortado is a Spanish delicacy coffee that has started to become more popular over the last few years. The name Cortado means ‘cut’ as the espresso is usually cut with steamed milk. Many Spanish coffee drinkers enjoy the cortado with a morning pastry, however, the cortado is widely enjoyed in the afternoon.
When is the best time to drink coffee in the afternoon?
Most people start to think about lunchtime, or a short break from 11:30 am, however, the perfect time to consume your afternoon coffee is any time after 2 pm.

After a long day, sitting down with a warm cup of coffee is the perfect way to end the evening. But which coffee is best for your coups de grâce? Let’s find out.
Espresso
The espresso we all know, and love is essentially a strong black coffee served in a small coffee cup, which is called a demitasse. Espressos are traditionally consumed in the afternoon or evening, often at the end of a meal.
When is the best time to drink coffee in the evening?
Caffeine is a beverage that is widely avoided for consumption before bedtime, however, that doesn’t mean you have to evade it altogether. Around 9 pm is the usual time that many people begin their winding down for bed, so coffee should be consumed before this time. Although, it’s best to remember that caffeine affects some people more than others, and the effect can depend on how much caffeine you normally consume.
