Rock Singer

Pretty catchy. I love the production. The vocals remind me of Evil Nine.

Poniiboiresponds:

Thanky. I'm gonna look up Evil Nine now.

Summer sounding loop

Sounds like DJ Shadow without the drums. Very nice. I like the guitar strum that came in halfway through a lot. Lots of neat little flourishes throughout.

jam7ieresponds:

Not going to lie, I had to google who DJ Shadow is!
Thanks for the compliments. I thought it would be a waste to let this loop just sit on my computer doing nothing!
There are some nice little components that help build it up, thanks :)

Pulp Fiction

I really liked when you had a drumroll line up with the gunshots. Quite clever. Whatever instrument you used for the bassline was really cool. It has a nice wobble to it, and not in a dubstep way, either. The drums sounded good. If anything, I'd just turn the bass down just a hair. I think it was just a bit loud. And I'd be careful about using copyrighted samples like that. I'm not entirely sure what ng's policy is on that. Otherwise, nice work.

deadfishfacesresponds:

Thanks. I thought the bass was a bit loud myself. The bass line is from Prime Loops- Platinum Crunk Grooves 1: Bass Pure Sole 78bpm (I stretched it out from 32 to 64 beats). I try to keep everything above the table with all the tracks I put on here. My sources are listed and I am not making any money from this, so I think it's safe.

How This All Began

The breakdown at :53 is really cool. Lots of cool percussive sounds. Ominous, albeit relaxing strings. I think when you have the beat going at :13, some of the hats are a touch too loud. Also, whenever you use the same sample at the same velocity twice in a row, like with the open hat you used, it reminds me I'm listening to a drum machine instead of drums. Minor tweaks and you'll be golden there. It sounds pretty nice.

Linktrxresponds:

Hey, thanks for the review man i appreciate it. I will have to go back and tweak that and a little compression on those hats would probably help the harshness too.

Synthetic Reality

I think you set up a really cool atmosphere with this, but you ran into some technical hangups. Mostly involving drums. I think the drums are compressed way too much. I can tell by the way the snare goes BOOSH after the hit. The hats are really annoying because 1) they're too loud and 2) they're panned all the way out. Some EQ on those hats wouldn't hurt either. The synths sound cool as hell though. The breakdown at 1:28 is f*cking great. Whole thing reminds me of the soundtrack to Machinarium. Fix up the drums and we'd be in business.

vai90responds:

Certainly agree on the drums, glad the breakdown came out well. Thx a lot for the Machinarium comparison! Sweet game. x)

Esther Is Dead

Really cool. I liked the glitch beat/staccato note part in the second half of the song (and the choir sounded lovely - what instrument/vst plugin did you use for that? Curious). I liked the sound of the first half, especially the guitar chord thing that accompanied the kick. That last string (3rd one? the highest string you used) bugged me because it felt like its rhythm was slightly off. I don't know if that might be because the string had a slow attack/fade-in which made it seem late for notes. Anyway, nicely done.

vai90responds:

Oh, the choir is just a sample, not a particular instrument/plugin. Thx for the reviews, especially the technical criticisms. Appreciate that a lot. Regarding the high string: I actually think it's on time. You do mean the one coming in at 1:26 right? Don't see (or hear rather) anything wrong with it.

-GM- By the Way

I'm not sure how this got down to 2.72/5. You got some haters, my friend. Meanwhile, the beat is excellent. I love the drum roll and the crash. I don't hear crashes too often in hip hop beats, but you work them quite well. I think maybe the crash is a slight, slight bit too loud. Slight. Minor fix. I love the stuttered horn at :50. The chord progressions are very cool as well - I'm not sure if it's a sample you chopped or something you wrote, but it sounds impressive nonetheless. THEN the beat changes at 1:34. I love it when the beat changes. I never expect that sh*t. You had an El-P moment. This beat's an impressive piece of work.

B-RadGfromOVresponds:

Thanks dude.

-GM- Golden

Excellent chopping. The beat feels like a dense alphabet soup of different things coalescing. I really enjoyed it.

B-RadGfromOVresponds:

Cool, nice metaphor there, thanks for listening.

Mixing Test

Nice. The bass and kick have a great relationship (foundation to any good mix) and the clinky high pitched instrument offers a nice contrast (high frequency) to the bassey sounds down below. You could go places with this.

TheZaaLresponds:

Yeah, I guess I could, but I wasn't planning to do so. Too bad!! Mabe later when I'll be out of ideas!

Thanks for the comments!

Untitled

Isn't that a didgeridoo? I heard that in Machinarium, in the one part where you help all the street musicians. This piece could go in interesting directions. I love the wallop the bass has. The kick takes a while to finish reverberating (or whatever the right word is). Cool sh*t.

Troisnyxresponds:

Yep, it's a didge. : ) And there are two kicks in this thing -- an odaiko (the biggest Japanese drum), and that one appears towards the end; and a hirado, which is the second biggest.

I'm glad you liked this piece!
