Opteon™ Refrigerants for Ice Rink Chiller Systems (2024)

Opteon™ Refrigerants for Ice Rink Chiller Systems (1)

Cost-efficient, Long-term Chiller Solutions for Rinks of All Sizes

There are more than 4,800 indoor ice rinks of all shapes, sizes, and purposes in North America—each one considered invaluable to the athletes who play there, the fans who gather there, and the community that surrounds it. The Chemours Company is dedicated to ensuring that the legacy of ice sports continues – which is why we’re committed to providing long-term, sustainable solutions for ice rink facilities.

Opteon™ hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants enable safe and energy-efficient chiller system operations. As rinks work to keep expenses down while addressing shifting regulatory standards, Opteon™ products are a big win for both existing ice-making system upgrades and new builds.

Be prepared for new regulatory compliance by 2025.

The U.S. EPA Technology Transition rule requires all new ice rinks to use a refrigerant with a GWP less than 700 by January 1, 2025. With a GWP of 631, Opteon™ XP10 (R-513A) complies with this regulation and allows for the continued use of an ASHRAE A1 refrigerant.

Whether you’re installing an entirely new system or retrofitting a R-134a system, Opteon™ XP10 (R-513A) is a versatile solution for the future, so your athletes can get back on the rink as quickly as possible.

Your Solution for the Future

XP10 (R-513A)

In new systems, Opteon™ XP10 offers the optimal balance of properties—decreased overall system energy consumption, potentially lower total cost of ownership, and improved safety for workers, players, and fans.

Opteon™ XP10 refrigerant has been one of the most popular solutions for ice arenas in recent years. This HFO blend has environmental advantages over legacy HCFC refrigerants such as R-22 and R-507, including zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and lower global warming potential (GWP), as well as equivalent performance.

And, Opteon™ XP10 is an advanced, next generation solution that minimizes the risks and performance shortcomings associated with alternatives like, R-717 (ammonia) and R-744 (CO₂), which include toxicity, and high operating pressures.
