Italian Cream Soda Ingredients

  • Flavored syrup – We used (and love!) raspberry syrup, but there are lots of flavors to choose from. And you can even do flavor combos!
  • Club soda – Plain seltzer water (sparkling water) works too.
  • Cream – Plain heavy cream or sweetened. (Sweet cream coffee creamer is delicious).
  • Ice – I am partial to crushed ice, but my kids prefer whole ice cubes
  • Toppings – Whipped cream, fruit, sprinkles.

Preparation

What is an Italian soda made of?

To make an Italian cream soda you’ll need ice, flavored syrup, chilled plain seltzer or club soda, and cream. You can also add toppings like whipped cream, fruit, and sprinkles.

What kind of syrup for Italian sodas at home?

We like the Torani brand of syrups, but there are several delicious options. We find them in the coffee aisle at our grocery store. I’ve also seen them at Ross and T.J. Maxx. And of course, you can always purchase the syrups on Amazon.

What kind of cream for Italian cream sodas?

We are partial to heavy cream or sweetened coffee creamer (specifically the sweet cream flavor). You can also use half and half or even whole milk in a pinch.

Why does Italian soda curdle?

When mixing flavors containing acid with cream (like orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit, and sometimes raspberry) it will curdle, you can avoid this by looking for dairy friendly syrups, but it does not affect the flavor so don’t worry too much about it!

Tips, tricks, and frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Italian soda and regular soda?

The biggest difference is that they contain cream. You can also find these in a much greater variety of flavors than traditional canned or bottled sodas.

Do Italian sodas have caffeine?

They do not contain caffeine unless you choose to add a caffeinated syrup like cola or chocolate. The fruit flavored Italian cream sodas are caffeine free.

Is club soda the same as carbonated water?

Club soda is a type of carbonated water that has been infused with minerals. Seltzer water (sparkling water) is carbonated water that contains no added minerals. They can be used interchangeably for this recipe.

Tonic water, however, contains quinine, which gives it a butter taste. We do not suggest using tonic water in your Italian soda recipe; sparkling water or club soda are best.

Top with whipped cream (or ice cream!) and a cherry or other fruit.

Are Italian sodas from Italy?

No, actually they were developed in the United States (specifically in San Francisco by the Torani syrup company) and are based on the American soda fountain. Italy has a similar drink though, made with the juice of Italian citrus fruit.
