A latte is a universally beloved coffee drink and one that’s consistently ordered throughout coffee shops all over the country. It’s no wonder either as it’s incredibly versatile and can come in just about any flavour variant, from vanilla to the more extravagant such as praline or toffee nut.
There are many that think this deliciously creamy beverage is exclusively a coffee shop treat, but it’s actually very simple to make at home and can even be done without a coffee machine! Keep reading to find out how to make a latte at home with our straightforward guide.
How to Make a Latte
Whether you’re looking to make a latte as a simple treat or want to impress visiting guests, it’s super easy to make a latte at home. Simply follow our steps to enjoy a wonderfully creamy beverage, using ingredients you’ll likely find in your own cupboard!
Make your strongly brewed instant coffee in a tall latte glass.
If you’re adding sugar or syrup, add it to your coffee mixture and then set it aside for a moment.
Next, you need to steam your milk. Grab a saucepan and your thermometer, add the milk and then heat it slowly on a medium heat, stirring from time to time to ensure it doesn’t boil. If you’re using dairy milk it will need to reach 65°C, 60°C for soy or 54°C for almond.
Now you’ve steamed your milk, you’ll need to froth it! Choose from the two options listed below to froth your milk.
Finally, add the milk to your latte glass and then all that’s left to do is enjoy!
How to froth milk with a milk frothing wand:
Leave the milk in the pan and then place the frothing wand so it’s half way into the milk.
Turn on your frothing wand and pull it toward the surface of the milk slowly, then lower it down to the middle again, continue this process for around 30 to 45 seconds, or until the milk’s nice and foamy.
How to froth milk without a milk frothing wand:
If you don’t have a frothing wand, then there’s no need to worry! You can do it in the microwave too. Grab a jar (jam jars are best) and fill it around half way with milk and screw the lid on.
Once you’ve done this, carefully give it a good shake until the milk’s frothy.
Then, remove the lid carefully and put it in the microwave to heat for 30 seconds, uncovered.

As far as what is in a latte, the popular drink consists of espresso, steamed milk and a thin layer of milk foam. The classic latte ratio is one-third espresso to two-thirds steamed milk, although coffee shops and recipes often use more milk to create a rich and creamy beverage with a subtle espresso flavor.
Brew 2 tablespoons of dark roast coffee for each 5 or 6 ounces of water. When your coffee is done brewing, it's time to make the latte magic happen. Pour the strongly brewed coffee into a cup, leaving room at the top and add the cup of steamed milk that you made.
With a Latte the ratio of espresso to hot milk tends to be 1:3, 1 part espresso to 3 parts milk. In reality, I think we see 1:4 and 1:5 in many coffeehouses. In some techniques, the espresso and milk are added simultaneously or the espresso is added to the milk.
For a latte, you must add the coffee grounds first then your steamed milk. Fill the latte glass slowly with steamed milk, making sure the foam reaches it last for that perfect rich coffee texture.
However, the slight differences in their proportions are what differentiate these two beverages. A caffe latte typically has a 2:1 ratio of milk to espresso, with more steamed milk than a latte, which usually has a 1:2 ratio of milk to coffee.
For fill level, try going to just below where the spout starts to form. In these size pitchers, that'll get you about 5 or 6 ounces, enough for a large latte. If that's too much, you can go with less, but you probably don't want to add more as the milk will expand when frothed.
Once you're making. it at home, your classic latte goes from $3.65 to about $1.35 a day, keeping $575.68 in your bank account at the end of the year. Again, this includes the cost of a basic espresso machine, so this figure drops by almost 50 cents per drink after the first year of use.
Depending on the barista, a latte consists of 60ml of espresso, 150ml of frothed milk, and 1 cm of milk foam on top to give that special touch. The frothing of the milk will be done through the steam wand of your espresso machine.
Even without an espresso machine, a milk frother, or other toys of the trade, you can make a pretty decent latte at home — and yes, it will have a beautiful cap of foam. All you need is an espresso or strongly brewed coffee, and a frothy milk, which is easy to make it in the microwave.
