"This powdered hot tea mix flavored with orange, cloves, and cinnamon has been a favorite of mine since childhood... and is now a favorite inexpensive gift for friends and family. Our family can't go through fall or winter without it! (The vitamin C, cinnamon, and cloves are all proven germfighters, too!)"

ingredients

  • 20 ounces tang powdered drink mix (one full tub)
  • 13 cup instant tea (I use the kind with lemon)
  • 34 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 38 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or 3 if you like it sweeter)

directions

  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly. A food processor makes this effortless, but I managed with a blender for years, and have even stirred it together by hand when necessary-- although it's not quite as pretty when done that way.
  • To enjoy: stir 2-3 heaping teaspoons into a mug of hot water and adjust to suit your own taste. Ahhh!
  • This mix starts to harden in the jar after six months or so, so drink up! Servings and Yield are approximations only.

  1. my oldest sis used to make this for me when I was 7years old. I always loved it and had no idea the receipe would still be around! I'm so happy! She used sweet instant tea but didn't add sugar to the cup, just hot water. Definitely keep it air tight cause it's no fun when it gets hard. thanks for this, a 53 year old memory has came to life

  3. I am so glad to find this recipe. About 60 years ago when I was fairly young, my mom and all her friends were making this spiced tea mix, calling it 'Russian Tea'. I think she (and they) were introduced to this recipe through Home Extension. I had lost the recipe and when we recently had our first cold snap it crossed my mind. It was so comforting and I really lived it, then and now! Thanks for posting it!

  4. I did not have a 3/8 Teaspoon. I read online that it equals less than a 1/2 Teaspoon but more than a 1/4 Teaspoon. To keep it simple, and since I like cloves, I used a 1/2 Teaspoon of Cloves instead of a 3/8 Teaspoon in the mixture. Turned out perfect. Tasted just like the Russian Tea my Mom used to make when I was a kid. I love lots of flavor so for every 1.5 Cups of Water, I add 2 Rounded Tablespoons of the Russian Tea Mixture. Comforting memories of childhood on a cold day.

  5. Delicious. I tried another recipe but it seemed to have too much instant tea flavor. Not this one, this recipe is really good!

  2. Made this today due to a little hoarseness from coughing. I added a little more sugar, cinnamon, cloves and even a few sprinkles of nutmeg. After making a hot cup of tea, I threw a cinnamon stick into my cup. Sooo good!

  3. This a favorite I have made at Christmas for years. I have done it with my nieces and nephews for gifts for their parents and bake cookies while I gave their parents a day to shop. Now I do it with my grandsons. So much fun!!!
