The jury is out on which country originally created the doughnut, America or Holland? Somehow along the way they got their famous hole and were rebranded as doughnuts- and the rest is history.

Either way, there are two popular ways to cook them - fried or baked. All the recipes we have seen differ slightly but have the same characteristics. Fried doughnuts are yeast recipes that rise, are light in texture and medium brown. Baked doughnuts are smaller, baking powder driven and more compact.

A typical fried glazed donut will be around 269 calories, while a baked donut will have much fewer. The difference is the fact that you won’t be dealing with any extra fat from the oil from frying when you bake.
