As a Southerner, I know that waffles aren't just for brunch. Chicken and waffles with hot honey are a staple that keeps our waffle makers fired up. I also know that having a clean waffle maker at the ready makes any waffle taste better. You can have yummy waffles morning, noon, and night by following the simple steps to clean every type of waffle maker.

Cleaning Considerations Before You Begin
If you have a true waffle iron that is placed directly on a stovetop burner or a waffle maker with cast iron plates, it should be cleaned and seasoned just like a cast iron skillet. Most modern electric waffle makers have plates coated with a non-stick surface that will not rust and does not require seasoning.
How Often to Clean a Waffle Maker
If you want tasty waffles, the maker should receive a quick cleaning after every use to remove stuck-on bits that can attract pests and encourage bacterial growth, as well as residual oil that can become rancid. Then, do a deeper cleaning at least monthly. If you use the waffle maker only occasionally, do a deeper, more thorough cleaning before storing it.

How to Clean a Waffle Maker
Unplug and Cool Down
- Before cleaning a waffle iron, unplug it and let it cool down. Go enjoy your freshly-made waffles.
- If this is the first time you've used the maker, take a minute to read the care instructions in the user manual.
Get Rid of Crumbs, Oil, and Stuck-on Batter
- Use a dry paper towel or soft-bristled brush to whisk away crumbs from the waffle plates.
- Absorb any excess oil by folding a paper towel into a square and using the edges to get into every crevice in the grid.
- To soften any baked-on batter clinging to the outside edges, place a few drops of vegetable oil on a paper towel and rub the oil onto the hardened batter. It will soften quickly and you can wipe it away.
Clean the Waffle Plates
- If the waffle maker has removable plates, they can be hand-washed in warm, soapy water or, if it is recommended by the manufacturer, placed in the dishwasher.
- For fixed plates, mix two cups of warm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
- Dip a cloth, soft-bristled dish brush, or non-abrasive sponge in the solution. Wring out excess water and gently scrub the plates. Try to get into every crevice.
- Finish cleaning the plates by dipping a clean microfiber cloth in fresh water, wringing until just damp, and wiping away soapy residue.
Clean the Outside of the Waffle Maker
- Use the same warm, soapy solution and a cloth to clean the outside of the maker.
- Wipe down every surface and then rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
Dry Well
- Use a dry, lint-free cloth to dry the inside and outside of the waffle maker before storing.
- Replace clean, dry removable plates before storing.
How to Deep Clean a Waffle Maker
Eventually, even if you clean the waffle maker after every use, the grid surfaces can get sticky from oily residue. Here's how to deep clean your waffle maker.
- In a small bowl, make a paste of 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. Use a paper towel or soft-bristled brush to spread the paste on the waffle plates and anywhere the appliance feels sticky.
- Leave the paste on the appliance for an hour to absorb the excess oil. (It may turn yellow or brown as it works.)
- Wipe away the dried paste with a damp cloth. Toothpicks work great to clean out gunk caught in seams or crevices.
- Dry the waffle maker with a cloth before using or storing it.
Tips to Keep Your Waffle Maker Clean and Working Well
- Don't use cooking spray to coat the waffle plates. It builds up and leaves a sticky residue on the maker, especially if you overspray.
- Don't use metal utensils to remove the waffles when they're done. Every scratch, even tiny ones, damages the non-stick surface and causes waffles to stick.
- Never submerge the waffle maker in water!
