22-year-old singer-songwriter Ashley Kutcher has dropped her latest single and video, “If I Could” and it’s truly her best work yet. On top of that, Beyond The Stage had the pleasure of catching up with her and talking about all things music.
We covered everything from her recent start in writing music, her plans for the future, the music getting her through quarantine and more!
Beyond The Stage: How did your musical journey begin?
Ashley Kutcher: I’ve been surrounded by music ever since I was little. Over the years, my dad built a music studio in our basem*nt. He would buy my sister and me guitars and karaoke machines that we would always play with.
My first show ever was at my high school and I absolutely fell in love with performing. From then on, I continued to learn guitar, and in college, I started booking local live gigs. I met a ton of local musicians who helped me start to create my own music and sound. Once I started writing my own songs in college, I just couldn’t stop.
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
AK: My music could be described as a few different genres. I would personally say it stays in the singer-songwriter/pop category. I LOVE guitar samples and subtle pop elements that I include in a lot of my productions. I tend to tell stories through my lyrics. A lot of my verses describe specific situations and I think that’s why so many people can relate to my songs.
BTS: Who are some of your influences?
AK: My top influences would have to be Lennon Stella, Hozier, The Band Camino, Giveon, Tate McCrae, Amy Winehouse, and Billie Joel.
BTS: You dropped your latest single, “If I Could” today! What was the writing process like for that track?
AK: I co-wrote “If I Could” with two of my friends in the band VOILA. We wrote the song specifically about a girl who was suffering from cancer. We kept saying, “if only we could take the pain away from her.” As the song progressed, I started thinking about my own life and how this song related to my experiences. When people started reaching out to say how this song was relating to their own lives in a big way, I knew I needed to release it.
BTS: Was it different recording a new EP during a pandemic?
AK: Pandemic songwriting is all I’ve really ever known. After graduating nursing school in December, I had a complete career change. I’ve only been in the music industry officially for a few months. So I guess I could say I’m excited to see what recording and writing are like when I’m not doing it from home.
BTS: Will you be releasing a video for the track?
AK: Yes, it’s the first music video I’ve made with my record label, The Darkroom/Interscope. The entire crew made the video so captivating and I cannot wait to show it to everyone!

BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to tour again?
AK: Performing is the reason I fell in love with music and wanted to be an artist. So I am most looking forward to being on stage and also watching my favorite artists get back on stage! I also can’t wait to meet everyone who has been listening to my music during this pandemic.
BTS: What are you listening to right now?
AK: I listen to so many different kinds of music. But as I’m looking at my phone, my top three songs this week are “Peaches” by Justin Bieber/Daniel Caesar/Giveon, “Sober Up” by Annika Bennett and “Gasoline” by Leyla Blue. I’ve also been listening to the Spotify playlist, Sunshine Reggae when it’s nice out because it makes me excited for warmer weather.
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
AK: There are so many exciting things happening in 2021. I am working on a project that I cannot wait to share and I’m also hoping live shows will be somewhat back by the end of the year, fingers crossed! This is just the beginning of my career and I cannot wait to continue this journey with the support of everyone who’s been listening!
