The Waffle Stitch

The waffle stitch is done using alternating front post and back post double crochet stitches. Instead of working in the top loop of the next stitch, you will wrap your yarn around the post of the next stitch instead. This tutorial uses theATC (Alternative Turning Chain) stitch in place of a starting chain 3. Using a 2-round repeat, you can make your granny square as big or small as you like. Follow the free pattern below to learn how to make the waffle granny square. Keep in mind, this stitch can be a yarn eater, so make sure you have enough yarn to complete your project.
