Fall Outfits 2022 for Women - New Fashion Trends | Levi's® US (2024)

You feel that? That’s fall in the air. You know the one, it starts off cool and breezy and slowly burns off to be–well–kinda summery still. And while it may not be a huge deal weather-wise, that slight chill in the morning makes all the difference when it comes to transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall. So what do you wear when it’s a little too hot for those chunky sweaters you love and a little too cold for those summer dresses? Well, we’ll tell you with the help of our specially curated, expertly styled looks of the month. This month’s theme? The perennial transitional workhorse: layers. It’s gonna be a good one so read on.

You can already feel it can’t you? That transitional weather is slowly creeping in changing the way we dress from light, bright and breezy to something a little more complex. September style starts with battling the chilly mornings that are a taste of weather yet to come and ends with sometimes sweltering summer-like temperatures that remind you that fall hasn’t *quite* started yet. So, how do we dress for that? Transitional temps are always tricky but you’ve come to the right place, friends. Our look of the month is a replicable, easy way to decode September's super confusing dress code to help you find the styles you’ll be wearing all month long. Alright, let’s get started.

THE THEME: LAYERS

We know what you’re thinking. Why did we say “looks” of the month and not “look of the month”? Well, that’s an easy one. North America has some pretty diverse climates and weather patterns, so September weather looks *really* different from place to place. You could be feeling the chill up in Canada while Florida never really stops feeling like summer. That’s why we specially calibrated our looks for the specific temperature ranges in the north and south to help you make our theme work for you. So back to the theme: “layers”. Layers hold a special place in our hearts because they’re just. so. versatile. Take a light cardigan and an easy t-shirt for instance. Cold in the morning? That sweater has your back (and your front if you button it up). Hot on your afternoon walk? Take it on with just the tee. They’re primed to make transitional weather work for you.

So that’s kind of a no-brainer right? But the hard part here is not the strategy, it’s the execution. How do you coordinate all these sweaters, tees, and jeans and accessories to make them work together harmoniously? Well, we’ll lay down some easy rules to help you understand how to coordinate your layers so you can better understand how we built our looks. Let’s talk color, pattern and texture coordination.

    COLOR

You all may or may not remember this from elementary school art class, but there is such a thing as a color wheel. All color theory is based on an understanding of the six colors of the rainbow as arranged on this wheel or circle. To understand the wheel you have to first look at the primary colors–aka the colors that you can’t make by mixing two other colors together. These are red, yellow, and blue. On the color wheel, they sit in a triangle so that there is another color in between each of them. What are those colors you ask? Those are the secondary colors you get from mixing two primaries together. So, for example, in between red and blue on the color wheel is purple, in between red and yellow is orange, and in between blue and yellow is green.

Ok so that was a lot but we promise there’s a reason why we just walked you through all that. That reason is that if you’re putting together an outfit with multiple colors in it–which, who isn't–you’re going to want to pick colors based on their location on the wheel. The safest bet? Complimentary colors that are across from each other on the wheel, like green and purple, or blue and orange. Another good choice–stay within the family. Primaries look great with each other and so do secondaries.

      PATTERN

For pattern mixing, we’ll spare you the technical lesson and go for something a little more intuitive. We’ve got two main strategies here. The first is that if you’re going to mix patterns they should be patterns of different scale. So a tiny polka dot print shirt would look great with an oversized plaid print. The next strategy is about pattern type. We recommend mixing geometric regimented patterns like stripes or windowpane with organic artistic prints like paisley and floral. The flowing nature of one naturally complements the predictable nature of the other and you don’t have to worry about scale if you’re focusing on this strategy.

        TEXTURE

This one is arguably the easiest of the bunch because there aren’t really rules when it comes to pattern mixing. A fuzzy sweater looks great with a satiny skirt, and a tweed jacket looks amazing with leather. So in lieu of rules, we’ll use this section to endorse pattern mixing and say that it’s a great way to add visual interest to an outfit without having to get into the weeds with color and patterns. Wherever you feel like a look needs a little extra something, a pattern can help.

          THE LOOKS

          LOOK 1

This layered look is a little funkier. Vintage-inspired flare jeans immediately up the ante with their dramatic silhouette. We double down on the drama by layering on two oversized tops. The first is a classic white button-down. You’ve been wearing them all summer as a top layer over an easy tank but this fall we’re doing something a little different. Next, we added a fuzzy ombre sweater with lava lamp vibes–you know, to match the ’70s energy coming off the bell bottoms. Stacked heels complete the look.

            LOOK 2

We can’t think of a more quintessentially Levi’s® layering look than this one here. Right off the bat, we start with a graphic tee with our logo front and center. The ringer style design puts a pop of color at the neckline. Next we add a healthy dose of denim up top with a light wash Western Shirt and down below with a medium wash relaxed fit straight leg jean. We love the denim on denim in contrasting washes so much–we added a third denim piece into the mix. Enter: An oversized slouchy Trucker Jacket, just because.

              LOOK 3

These lightweight layers are super easy. Case in point we start off our look with a classic white t-shirt. Simple enough. Next, we added long flares in a high rise to really make those legs the focal point (the heels don’t hurt either). A fun sweater vest adds some warmth without adding too much warmth, but more importantly, its fun multicolored knit adds a little personality to this look. We finish things off with a full tuck and a belt to really highlight that waist.
