Is Evan Williams a true Bourbon? ›

Today, Evan Williams is the second largest selling Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey in the U.S. and the world, distilled just a few blocks from the site where Evan himself built his distillery.

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond is aged under government supervision and meeting the exact requirements for a Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. It has all the kick you expect—but still goes down smooth.

Evan Williams is a brand of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky, by the Heaven Hill company.

The Recipe - Bourbon is distilled from a fermented mash of grain, yeast and water. The “mash bill” must have a minimum of 51% corn. For most bourbons, the average is about 70%. Other grains such as rye, malted barley, and wheat are considered “flavor” grains.

Evan Williams is cheaper than Jack, Jim, and almost every other bottom-shelf American whiskey. And at 86 proof, it has a higher-than-average ABV. Yet despite the high proof and low price, Evan still delivers those vanilla, oak notes on the nose and palate.

Mike Voted EW, JM and Jack are very similar whisky blends, only difference is Jim Beam and Evan Williams are bourbons, and Jack is not. Still, they taste similar and anyone that says one sucks and one is great is an idiot! And by the way all of these are great with co*ke or ginger ale as a mixer.

The Federal Standards of Identity for Bourbon state determine what is and what isn't Bourbon. For a whiskey to be considered Bourbon, its mash – the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled – must contain at least 51% corn. The rest of the mash is usually filled out with rye or wheat, and malted barley.

Unlike Jack Daniel's, its sweetness leans towards a corn syrup artificiality. The finish on Evan Williams is notably short and laden with spice. In contrast, Jack Daniel's offers an oily, longer finish.

For a whiskey to call itself bourbon, its mash (the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled) must contain at least 51 per cent corn. The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, the distillate must be stored in charred new oak barrels at 125 proof or less, and it must not contain any additives.
