𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞: 𝐀 𝐏𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 Dr Sapna Balgobind has transformed a bridal tradition into a valuable guide for pathologists in her review paper, "Prognostic and Predictive Biomarkers in Head and Neck Cancer: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Sixpence in Your Shoe." Summarising her Fellowship experience, she collaborated with a team from NSW Health Pathology and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, including Dr Veronica Cheung, Dr Peter Luk, and Prof Ruta Gupta. Dr Balgobind offers practical guidelines for diagnosing head and neck cancers, addressing both conventional histopathology techniques and emerging factors like genetic rearrangements. This paper equips anatomical pathologists with essential tools to enhance their workflow and minimise risks. Great to see this new report from Research Australia highlighting the importance of clinician researchers. In addition to some amazing examples of clinician researchers from a range of clinical disciplines, the report calls for a series of changes needed to ensure we can continue to benefit from the unique combination of "science and service to healthcare" that clinician researchers offer. Many of the actions identified, especially with respect to research training and flexible careers that allow both research and clinical practice, are things we're already doing through the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Research Institute. And we strongly encourage many of the other recommended actions, especially those at a national level requiring whole of government support. Well done to all involved in the report.

𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫: 𝐃𝐫. 𝐕𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐤 𝐁𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐢 𝐂𝐨-𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐭One of our clinician researchers, Dr Vivek Bhadri, has recently co-authored a paper in The Lancet, reporting the results of a trial for patients with tenosynovial giant cell tumours, or TGCTs. These tumours affect joints in patients of all ages, cause significant pain and swelling with impacts on mobility and function, and are notoriously difficult to treat. The placebo controlled trial explored the effect of oral vimseltinib for patients with TGCT where surgery could not be performed and found that the new drug provides a very effective treatment option for these patients, offering a new standard of care that better addresses the functional issues and symptoms caused by this tumour. We're especially proud that from 35 sites across 13 countries, Chris O'Brien Lifehouse recruited the largest number of patients. A big congratulations to Vivek, our Clinical Trials Unit, and everyone involved in this practice-changing research. The Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Research Institute was lucky to host a unique presentation from international guest A/Prof David P. Labbé last week. Dr. Labbé is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology at McGill University who researches diet-dependent prostate cancer progression. His lecture focused on how we may be able to use 'precision nutrition' and other dietary interventions in cancer treatment to alter tumour growth, development, and therapeutic response. It's an exciting area of research, and we are grateful for David's generosity in sharing some of his ground-breaking research with us. #coblh #coblhresearchinstitute #internationalguest #precisionnutrition #prostatecancer #dietaryinterventions #cancertreatment #choosehope

𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫!Researchers at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse have discovered a world-first method to detect a deadly and common form of brain cancer with a simple urine test. This breakthrough could mean faster detection and diagnosis, especially if tumours return after treatment.Nigel Lokan Ph.D was 49 when he suffered his first seizure. Invasive neurosurgery was needed to identify the cause: Glioblastoma (GBM).GBM is the most common and aggressive type of adult brain cancer, requiring neurosurgery for diagnosis. Our Head of Brain Cancer Research, Dr Kimberley Alexander, and her team at COBL have been searching for a non-invasive way to detect and sub-type brain tumours, and they believe they are a step closer."We have been able to detect brain cancer molecules in urine that accurately indicate the presence of a Glioblastoma tumour," says Dr Alexander. These molecules decrease after treatment but increase again when the tumour reappears. This method could allow for continuous monitoring during treatment and earlier detection of recurrences.Dr Alexander and her team are now seeking urgent funding to fast-track this research into clinical trials, with investigations also underway into whether this approach could be used to screen for other types of cancer.7NEWS Australia #BrainCancer #Glioblastoma #CancerResearch #MedicalBreakthrough #HealthcareInnovation #coblh #choosehope
