Brussels, a capital with many facets (2024)

Brussels, a capital with many facets (1)

As part of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council, one of the interparliamentary meetings will take place in Brussels on 25 and 26 March. Brussels, well known as the capital of Belgium and the capital of Europe, is much more than that! It is a city with many facets, and it is well worth taking a closer look.

Brussels, capital of Europe

Provisionally designated as the seat of the European Union in 1957 and permanently in 1993, Brussels is home to a number of European institutions, including the European Parliament and the European Commission. Initially chosen for its central position in Europe, Brussels is now considered as the heart of the European Union and the scene of a large number of parliamentary meetings. Did you know that NATO's official headquarters is also located in Brussels? Therefore, it is logical that numerous prominent politicians from all over the European Union (and beyond) visit the city daily. As a result, Brussels is Europe's third-largest business city and it would make Brussels the third-largest conference city in the world- impressive, isn't it?

The most beautiful square in the world?

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, Brussels’ Grand Place is a historic gem. With a history dating back more than 700 years, this emblematic city square offers a unique experience. Brussels was a former economic centre in the Middle Ages. It has witnessed many historical events over the centuries, including the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence in 1880. The Ommegang, a folk procession, is held every year on the Grand-Place and attracts thousands of spectators. It is also listed as a UNESCO intangible heritage site. The most popular tourist destination, the Grand-Place is often referred to as the most beautiful square in the world. Why not come and see for yourself?

Brussels, a city of culture

Brussels stands out for its artistic heritage. The city is home to renowned museums such as the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, the Magritte Museum and the Horta Museum (in the personal home and studio of architect Victor Horta, 'founder' of Art Nouveau). The Théâtre de la Monnaie, meanwhile, is another magnificent venue where opera and ballet are performed in superb surroundings. Brussels is also alive with music, with festivals such as Couleur Café and free concerts on the Grand Place. What's more, world-famous artists such as Angèle and Lost Frequencies hail from Brussels! It is also the birthplace of singer Jacques Brel.

If you have the time, don't miss a visit to the Belgian Comic Strip Center, dedicated to the ninth art. In a building by... the architect Horta! All over the city, you'll find beautiful murals dedicated to comics. And yes... Hergé, the spiritual father of Tintin, was a native of Brussels. Just like Pierre Culliford (Peyo), who created The Smurfs.

Brussels, a cosmopolitan city

Did you know that Brussels is the second most cosmopolitan city in the world and the most cosmopolitan in Europe? There are over 180 different nationalities! Inclusion and respect for diversity are key principles in the capital. Take a stroll around Brussels and you will discover many neighbourhoods where different populations live side by side. You will find that in just 100 metres you will have heard several different languages all around you!

Overall, Brussels is an amazing city, combining culture, history and business. What is certain is that you will not have time to get bored. What's more, if you are passing through, do not hesitate to say hello to Manneken-Pis, a true Belgian icon that surprises many tourists with its small size and hundreds of costumes. A fine example of the originality of Belgium's capital!
