I used to believe that air purifiers were just for people who had smelly pets or bad allergies. After living with a roommate who insisted on using one 24/7, though, I now think everyone should have access.

In this article, I'll share the best options I've found for home air purification, and how they stood up to the various situations I've thrown at them, like diapers and forest fires.

Understanding Whole House Air Purifiers - Units vs Coverage

Before I jump into my list of favorite whole house air purifiers, I'd like to clarify that "whole house air purifier" can really mean two things:

  1. Permanent air purification units are what a technician installs directly into your HVAC system.
  2. Portable air purifier that is strong enough to accommodate whole house coverage, sometimes over 4000 square feet!

Iv'e spoken with so many homeowners who tell me that a permanent solution is not an option.

That's why the reviews within my article focuses solely on air purifiers offering whole house coverage rather than a permanent solution. If you want a HVAC compatible system, read the next section directly below.

Are Whole House Air Purification Systems Better For My Home?

For those seeking set-it-and-forget-it permanent air filtration, I recommend the Aprilaire brand of air cleaners.

I like these units because they are made in the USA, run silently along with your central AC/heat, and fit with nearly all ducted HVAC systems.

With only a couple hours of work, I can install one of these and offer customers 6 months of easy breezy air purification before it's time to change the filter.

How I Chose These Whole House Air Purifier Units

Filtration Needs

When I first started working with air purifiers, it became immediately evident that not all air purifiers are made equally. This comes down to the type of filtration they use. Here I've broken down the different types of filters and their best-use scenarios.

  • Media Filters: These are the most common types of filters used in air purifiers. They boast a thick network of various fibers that physically trap particles that come through the purifier, and need to be changed out once they are full. These media filters are usually HEPA-certified or "HEPA-like."
Some air purifiers, like the Levoit Core 600S, have additional media to target certain particles, like pet dander or environmental toxins. I recommend this type of filtration for folks who want to use their air purifiers in whatever life throws at them.
  • Activated Carbon Filter: This type is almost always in addition to a media filter, and their primary purpose is to remove odors. I always recommend models that include an activated carbon filter, like the Medify Air MA-112, for customers who are looking to target cooking odors, litter box smell, or teenage boy stinky laundry. I have found that activated carbon filters don't last quite as long as their media counterparts, and I usually have best results with odor control if I swap them out every 3 months or so. That said, I definitely put my air purifier through a lot with all of my home cooking.
  • Electrostatic Filtration/Ionizers: Models like the Turonic include this feature, which electrically charges particles by sending out negative ions. These filters are allegedly good for trapping viruses and bacteria, but are known to create ozone as a byproduct.
I think we still have a lot to learn about ionizers, so while they are a "probably beneficial" feature on some models, I wouldn't put too much expectation upon them just yet.
  • Ozone Generators: Ozone air purifiers don't have filters that often need changing, but work to emit ozone into the air. I have customers who have used ozone generators in their homes while they were away to help eradicate mold, but the jury is still out on their overall effectiveness. As we all aim to move toward a greener planet, these tend to be at the bottom on my recommendations, but I did include one model on my list (GT 3000) for those in extreme situations.

Other Factors I Considered

In my opinion, the coverage area and filtration of an air purifier are the two most essential features. Beyond that, though, there are a few other deciding factors on whether a product made my final list:

  • Noise levels:Most air purifiers will fall into the range of 25 dB to 65 dB, which is comparable to a fan. I tried to only include models that reached 65 dB when set on "High." I work from home, so the last thing I need is another noisy appliance.
  • Unique features: I looked for "extras" like sleep mode, eco mode, UV lights, dual capabilities like humidification, washable pre-filters, etc.
  • Price: Whole house air purifiers are obviously more money than those made to cover only a room, but the price can vary widely based on features. I tried to include a mix of budget friendly models and mid-range models.
Every model I included is under $1,000. I think if you're willing to spend more than that, you should consider a permanent air purification system, like an Aprilaireunit.

CONS
  • Filter lifespan is about four months

This air cleaner was originally designed to help parents provide their children with relief from poor air quality, so it uses medical-grade True HEPA filters paired with an activated carbon filter to catch 99.9% of airborne particles and eliminate odor.

In my opinion, the Medify MA-112 V2 hasthe best level of filtration you can buy for your home. It is definitely a strong contender for anyone who needs a purifier with the strength of a lion to tackle wildfire smoke, dust, pet dander, allergens, and unpleasant cooking odors.

I like that this model offers a child lock feature, and you can choose between four fan speeds with quiet operation. Plus, I can set a zero to eight hour timer to make sure that my child's sleep is never disturbed by me coming in to adjust settings.

This powerful True HEPA filter and air purifier system is ENERGY STAR-certified and backed by a USA-registered lifetime warranty.

This warranty is valid as long as you continue replacing the filter with genuine Medify replacements.

I'm not sure how I can prove filter use to them beyond receipts, but overall this is a significant plus for anyone nervous about making this large investment.

9 Best Whole House Air Purifiers For A Healthier Home (8)

At 32 pounds, the Medify air purifier is significantly heavier than many other purifiers on my list.

Most models weigh under 15 pounds, with the exception of this Medify model and the Alen BreatheSmart 75i HEPA Air Purifier.

Keep this in mind when choosing between models if you or anyone in your household cannot move heavier objects.

Personally, this air purifier’s weight is a considerable concern for me because I have a small dog and would be concerned about the model possibly falling over on them if my mischievous pup decided to “explore” this model too closely.

I recommend keeping this one behind a gate around small children and pets. I keep ours in our living space.

Overall, this air purifier from Medify is perfect for families in large homes up to 5000 square feet.

Who is the Medify Air Ma-112 V2 best for?

The Medify Air MA-112 V2is my top recommendation for parents with children who would benefit from a large space air purifier.

CONS
  • Water tank only holds 1.5L
  • More filters = more maintenance

I love when one device has more than one function, especially when it can actually deliver on both fronts.

That’s where the Turonic PH950 comes in, providing both air purification and humidification to large spaces.

This Turonic model boasts 8 filtration stages, which initially had me questioning if this was even possible.

Most of the models on my list, including my top pick of the Medify MA-112, only have 3 stages of filtration.

So let me break it down. Here’s how Turonic numbers their filtration stages:

  • Washable pre-filter
  • Cold catalyst filter
  • Activated carbon filter
  • Cotton filter
  • HEPA H13 filter
  • Ionizer
  • Humidification
  • UV Light

I would say that including the ionizer, humidification, and UV light as filter stages is a stretch, and most brands wouldn’t market it this way.

I also don’t really see the purpose of an extra cotton filter, but the Turonic still does a really impressive job of cleaning the air.

Like the Levoit Core that I reviewed (number four on this list), the Turonic PH950 has an auto mode, which is my absolute favorite feature.

I love that I can leave the air purifier on 24/7, and it will adjust the fan speed based on my current air quality. Most of air purifiers I reviewed only have the standard three fan speeds, including the VEWIOR Air Purifier.

The Turonic PH950 has an impressive 8 fan speeds, meaning that at the lowest speed, the sound will be nearly silent.

Overall, if you’re in the market for both an air purifier and humidifier for your home of up to 4200 square feet, I’d recommend the Turonic PH950.

Who is the Turonic PH950 best for?

The PH950 model is the best air purifier for homeowners looking for a dual-purpose product that provides air purification and humidification for large rooms and homes up to 4200 square feet.

The Medify products have impressed me so much that I had to include two on this list.

This one, the Medify MA-125, is the one I recommend when you don’t quite need the 5000 square feet of coverage that the Medify MA-112 offers.

This one is also about $80 cheaper, which can be a huge deal when on a budget.

Most of the features between the MA-125 (this one) and the MA-112 are similar, making this device a proper little “mini-me.”

However, this Medify purifier takes the edge on fan speeds. While it’s predecessor only has 4 fan speeds, this one has a total of 9 fan stages.

That means, just like the Turonic PH950 above, the Medify MA-125 can keep my home purified at all times and is nearly silent on the lowest speeds.

This air purifier is quite heavy at 40.7 lbs, so it’s ideal for those who have a particular location in mind.

If you think you’ll be moving your purifier around a bit, take a look at something more portable, like the Levoit Core.

My only gripe with the Medify brand is that their warranty coverage requires you to use authentic Medify filters, and those filters don’t come cheap.

However, with the highest level of HEPA filtration available (H14), it’s definitely worth the price, especially since the filter life is 3000 hours.

Who is the Medify MA-125 best for?

The Medify MA-125 is the best air purifier for homeowners looking for seamless air purification in homes up to 4100 square feet.

CONS
  • Some note WiFi connection issues

The Levoit Core 600S portable air purifier has a massive coverage area of 3,175 ft — plenty of square footage for any large room, such as a huge dining area, and homes with up to five bedrooms.

Its 3-in-1 filtration system captures a minimum of 99.7% of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in size, which I found matches or exceeds most other air purifiers on the market.

9 Best Whole House Air Purifiers For A Healthier Home (15)

For me, a 99.7% filtration percentage or better is the bare minimum I recommend because so many models on the market offer this or better.

One of the biggest benefits of this particular system is its QuietKEAP technology, which keeps noise levels as low as 26 decibels, which is softer than a whisper and plenty quiet whether you’re a light sleeper or working from home.

Not only that, but this modern air purifier can be synced through its free VeSync app and connected to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

I love that I can monitor air quality from anywhere or give my air purifier voice commands, freeing up my hands and allowing me to multi-task as I tackle chores around my home.

When allergy season hits, I can even check pollen data through the Vesync app and adjust the purifier accordingly to make up for sudden increases in pollen.

While allergies are never fun, this model makes it easy to adapt to changing weather conditions and seasons.

I find the Levoit Core 600S stands out for its innovative smart technology, whisper-quiet fans, and excellent sleep mode, which goes as far as to turn off even the small display lights, so you’re in total darkness.

This is a HUGE step above models like the Medify Air MA-112 V2, which only factor in reducing noise during its sleep mode.

The biggest downfall of this model is that it only works in temperatures below 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

As someone who has lived in scorching deserts, this would be an absolute dealbreaker for me if I wasn’t now living in a cooler climate.

Who is the Levoit Core 600S best for?

I recommend the Levoit 600S to those looking to purify a large home as quietly as possible.

CONS
  • Lower CADR than advertised

The first thing that drew me to the MORENTO H13 air purifier is its 360-degree air intake design, similar to the Levoit Core.

I find that these models provide a bit more thorough air circulation, especially compared to models that are meant to just stand against a wall.

This air purifier is suitable for spaces of up to 1076 feet, so if you’re in a small one or two-bedroom apartment, this will be a good option.

That said, this is also one of the most quiet models on my list, which would also make it suitable for a bedroom or nursery.

In fact, kids, in particular, have really come to love this model because it can operate with your choice of seven night light colors. (Don’t worry, grownups, you can also choose “no light.”)

MORENTO isn’t a huge brand name that everyone knows, but they’ve made a really reliable product here.

With its easy-to-use functions, I would recommend this one to those who are looking for a straightforward model to get the job done.

It’s also good for those who are curious whether or not an air purifier with provide any benefit in their home because it’s not that expensive.

I know a few people who have started with the MORENTO in one room before buying a larger whole-home purifier like the Alen BreatheSmart.

Who is the MORENTO H13 HEPA Air Purifier Best For?

This Morento air purifier is what I recommend to those looking for medical-grade filtration for their apartment or small home.

CONS
  • Not integrated into your HVAC system

The Alen uses a H13 HEPA Pure filter technology— the absolute best filter life available on the market — and has a top-notch 99.9% removal rate, which is about as high a percentage as you can get and better than models like the Leviot Core 600S with a standard 99.7% filtration efficiency.

While that 0.2% difference may not seem like a lot, any serious allergy sufferer (Present!) can tell you that we’ll take all the help we can get for maximum relief.

You can also opt for multiple colors and varieties, from the allergy option to odor and smoke coverage options, allowing you to customize your model to your exact needs.

For example, I don't live somewhere with much smoke, so I can stick with the model designed for allergies.

My favorite feature? This purifier doesn't impact my energy bills greatly. Its high energy efficiency only generates an energy cost of approximately 11 cents per day, even when run for 24 hours daily — slashing any concerns I have about my utility bills spiking.

I also like the SmartSensor technology built into this product. Its SmartSensor technology detects airborne particles, automatically adjusting its fan speeds to clean the air.

Simultaneously, the Alen purifier has an indicator that lights up different colors to indicate how clean the air is, so you can see your purifier working in real-time.

For example, blue light means the air quality is excellent, but red or purple indicates poor to bad air quality.

This cleaner has a built-in pollutant level monitor that auto-adjusts the fan to create optimal air quality.

The Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is ENERGY STAR-certified and uses less electricity than an LED lightbulb, making it a cost-effective choice.

In terms of removing contaminants, this purifier checks off all the boxes as it removes mold, pollen, bacteria, allergens, viruses, and other pollutants from your home’s air.

I particularly like that this model has a washable pre-filter, saving me money in filter replacements over time. Another plus in terms of value for money.

This model has also been independently tested for performance and safety and releases no ozone into the air — a claim that models like the GT 3000 Whole House Air Purifier can’t make, so this is an excellent product for anyone concerned about ozone released in their home.

Overall, I recommend this air purifier to anyone concerned about their all-day air purifier sucking up a lot of energy or those wanting a hands-off product that they can plug in and go.

Not only does this air purifier have a significant coverage area of 3,000 square feet (which covers most three to four-bedroom homes), but its ‘active air purification system’ isn’t passive — a huge differentiator from other products on the market.

This system doesn't just filter particles that reach the filter. It also creates ionization, attracting particles in your home together.

Once attracted together, the particles "clump" and fall down, removing them from the breathable air.

9 Best Whole House Air Purifiers For A Healthier Home (24)

The best part about this is that the system is unmatched with the tiny particles it can remove, boasting the ability to remove particles smaller than 0.3 microns, which is better than any of the other purifiers on this list can claim.

If you’re looking not just to filter but deep clean the breathable air in your home, this is the air cleaner I'd recommend above all else.

The difference between other models and the GT3000 is what you'd expect between a DIY carpet cleaning day and a luxury deep cleaning performed by the pros.

We all know that DIY carpet cleaning is better than nothing, but it certainly doesn't stack up when compared to the work of a professional who makes your carpet feel like new.

The only downside? The GT3000 model creates ozone during the ionization process.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, ozone creates a distinctive odor and may cause throat irritation, coughing, and shortness of breath.[1]

However, the GT3000 product lists that it doesn’t produce a high enough ozone density for this to be a concern (if you’re still worried, consider the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ instead, which boasts no ozone!)

Who is the GT3000 best for?

Out of all the purifiers on this list, the GT 3000 Whole House Air Purifier is my top choice for the best whole house air cleaner for mold.

Pros
  • Ultra-quiet fans
  • Child lock feature
  • 24-hour customer support

CONS
  • Corded electric power source

Similar to the Medify Air MA-112 V2 air purifier, the VEWIOR Whole House Air Purifier uses a three-stage filtration system with an activated carbon filter, a H13 True HEPA filter, and a pre-filter that catches dust, lint, fibers, and pet dander.

This surpasses my expectations, especially for an air purifier with such a competitive price point.

This air purification system also comes with three fan speeds and five timer options, providing plenty of choices that meld with your lifestyle.

I personally use settings like these to customize when my air cleaner is running and how fast (and loud) the fan is moving so that I can reduce noise while working and intensify the fan speed when I’m out of the house.

Like the Alen BreatheSmart purifier, this model offers a built-in air quality sensor with real-time PM2.5 levels so you can see exactly what your home’s air quality is like.

9 Best Whole House Air Purifiers For A Healthier Home (27)

With that said, I prefer Alen BreatheSmart’s color-coded indicator for an easy visual over the real-time numbers, but this all depends on your preference.

Both offer an excellent way to determine your home’s air quality and see the results of your new air purifier.

I love that this purifier has a built-in filter reminder that lights up red whenever I need to replace the filter.

While this is a pretty standard feature, it's useful and something I look for in a product.

A standout feature that only VEWIOR offers among the models in my guide is an aromatherapy diffuser option.

In addition to improving my home's air quality, I can drop my favorite essential oil on top of the purifier's essential oil cotton pad, and it will diffuse a lovely fragrance throughout my home.

Clean-up is also simple, as you can clean the washable filter cover with just water — a huge bonus for someone like myself who doesn't want to reference the product manual every time the filter needs to be cleaned to remind me what can and can't be used on it.

Who is the VEWIOR best for?

I recommend the VEWIOR to those looking to combine air purification with aromatherapy.

Do Not Ignore These Questions When Buying a Whole House Air Purifier

How Many Square Feet Does Your Home Have Inside?

The first factor to consider when selecting the best air purifiers for your home is how many square feet your home has and its floor plan.

If you have an open floor plan like mine, you can purchase one purifier with a moderate coverage area.

However, bigger homes need coverage for a large space to achieve clean air free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) throughout the entire home.

This makes models like the Medify Air MA-112 the optimal choice as it cleanses over 5,000 square feet.

*Also Note - In addition to square footage coverage, make sure you understand and take into account theCADR ratingof the air purifier. We also have anACH rating calculator here.

How Much Energy Does the Purifier Use?

Certain models, like the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ air cleaner, consume very little energy, even less than an LED bulb, making it a cost-effective way to remove pollutants from the air.

Extra Features Worth Considering

Your biggest goal should be finding HEPA filters and activated carbon filters to reduce the pollutants in your area and improve the smell within your home.

Personally, my biggest concern with an air purifier has always been removing dust and other allergens from the air because of the type of allergies I struggle with.

I always look for HEPA filters and smart features like an air quality indicator.

Think about what extra features are important to you, too.

Some other features I find valuable include:

  • Smart sensors for auto adjusting fan speeds
  • Sleep mode
  • Quiet mode
  • Smartphone and app compatibility
  • Voice control
  • Filter change notifications
Models like the Levoit Core 600Sand Alen BreatheSmart 75i have some of the best features in terms of smart technology, which I recommend as they provide that extra level of personalization.

So, Which Will You Buy?

A quality whole air purifier should meet your budget while delivering clean air and eliminating volatile organic compounds, smoke particles, larger particles, common allergens, and more.

My top recommendation is the Medify Air model air purifier because it’s perfect for cleaning the air of large spaces, such as a whole house or entire home.

Its operating costs are low, and its combination of HEPA filters and an activated carbon filter makes it perfect for removing dust and other pollutants.

My #1 Recommendation

Medify Air MA-112 V2
  • Equipped with wheels
  • Three filtration layers
  • Ozone-free ionizer
  • Massive coverage
